Physical Exams Q & A

What is a physical exam?

A physical exam is a necessary part of keeping tabs on your health as you age. During a physical exam, Dr. Lovell will ask questions about your health and perform tests to make sure your body is functioning properly.

You will also have the opportunity to ask Dr. Lovell questions about your health and lifestyle. He’ll give you advice on how to stay healthy, and he’ll make recommendations if you are diagnosed with something and need a treatment plan.

Why should I get a physical exam?

There are many reasons to get regular physical exams. The main reason, of course, is to make sure you stay healthy. Other reasons for getting physical exams include:

  • Identifying issues or behaviours that could lead to disease
  • Diagnosing diseases early
  • Forming a relationship with your primary care provider
  • Updating your immunizations

With regular physical exams, Dr. Lovell can get familiar with the specific workings of your body in order to find abnormalities more quickly.

What happens during a physical exam?

A physical exam starts with a series of questions from a nurse or another provider regarding your medical history, habits, lifestyle, allergies, and medications. Once these are established, Dr. Lovell will be better able to pinpoint areas that need extra attention. During your physical exam, Dr. Lovell will:

  • Listen to your heart with a stethoscope
  • Monitor your breathing with a stethoscope
  • Check your blood pressure
  • Examine your body for unusual marks
  • Tap your body to feel for fluid accumulation
  • Check your height and weight

If you have questions or concerns about your health, be sure to have them ready to ask Dr. Lovell at your appointment.

When should I get a physical exam?

You should get physical exams regularly, but how often you need them will depend on your age. If you’re under age 30 and generally healthy, you will only need a physical exam once every 2-3 years. For patients ages 30-40, physical exams are necessary every other year. If you’re over age 40, you should get a physical exam once a year.

Physical exams are an essential step in monitoring your health as you age. To schedule a physical exam, book an appointment online or over the phone with Charles F. Lovell, M.D., today.
